Beach Day Checklist: 8 Things You Need for a Day at the Beach

Nothing says “summer” quite like a day at the beach. If you are heading to the coast for a relaxing day on the water, there are a few things you are going to need to make the most of your day. So put on your cutest bathing suit and pack your bags with these eight things before you head to the beach this summer.

Sunscreen

You will want to have a couple different types of sunscreens if you plan to spend the whole day at the beach. One application in the morning before you head out for the day doesn’t cut it when there is sand and water in the mix. Make sure you are reapplying sunscreen periodically and aim for one that you have to rub in rather than a spray. Beaches are windy and spray sunscreens can end up being difficult to apply properly. To ensure you aren’t missing any spots, use a lotion sunscreen and don’t forget to pack a sunscreen that you can use on your face. A Lip balm that includes SPF is also a good idea since your lips are not immune from the sun’s harmful rays.

Seating

There are a few different things you can bring to keep you and your family comfortable while at the beach. Beach chairs are great once you’re there, but they are often bulky and difficult to carry on the sand, especially if you have a larger party. A more lightweight option would be a large blanket or sheet with a small tarp underneath to ensure it stays dry. You can also bring outdoor cushions or rubber mats to sit on if a blanket doesn’t cut it.

Shade

Don’t skip out on an umbrella or canopy if you plan on being at the beach all day. Spending time out in the sunshine is great at first, but after a few hours in the sun you will be glad to have the option to take a break in the shade. Having the choice to be in the shade or sun is key to having a relaxing and fun day at the beach.

Towels

Towels are an obvious necessity for laying out on or drying off after a dip in the ocean. They are also needed to help wipe sand off your hands, face or eyes. Bring at least two so you have one for drying off and one for laying out.

Protective Clothing

Even with sunscreen and an umbrella, over-exposure to the sun can still happen. If you notice yourself starting to burn, you will want to stop applying sunscreen and cover up instead. Bring a lightweight long sleeve top to cover your upper body should you start to burn. You will also want to make sure you have sun hats and sunglasses to help protect your face and eyes from the UV rays.

Cooler

You will definitely need to bring a cooler for your day at the beach. You want to make sure it is fully stocked with plenty of water and hydrating snacks like fruits and vegetables. It’s important to make sure that everyone is staying hydrated as they play out in the sun and water. If you want to bring any alcoholic beverages with you, make sure you look into the local laws. Some beaches are not alcohol friendly. If you are bringing alcoholic drinks, make sure that they are not in glass bottles. Most beaches do not allow glass containers for safety reasons.

Beach Bag/Wagon

A beach bag is a good option to put all your supplies in, but a beach wagon is a great option if you have a lot of stuff. There are small collapsible wagons that have wheels that are equipped for the sand. These are perfect if you decide to bring beach chairs, a large canopy, or heavy coolers. There is nothing worse than having to haul all your beach gear down the thick sand in the blazing sun before you can relax. Invest in a beach wagon so you can skip the hard part and get to relaxing quicker.

Activities

Sand toys, water guns, footballs, or frisbees are all great things to bring to keep both kids and adults entertained at the beach. Boogie boards or skim boards are also great if you have older kids or teens. Pool floats or noodles are perfect for relaxing in the waves, so make sure to pick out a couple. Check out FUNBOY’s inflatable pool floats if you are looking for those large multi-person floats that have been all over social media.

To the Beach!

You can use this checklist any time you are heading out to the beach to ensure you aren’t missing any essentials. However, if you do miss anything, there is never any shortage of shops around the beach that sell anything you may have left behind. Enjoy the beach and don’t forget to reapply your sunscreen and stay hydrated!
